One quick glance at the SanDisk Extreme and it becomes immediately clear that we’re dealing with a far more rugged device than your average portable SSD, the entire case being covered by a rubber-like coating to protect it from drops (from up to 6.5 feet).įurthermore, the coating on the bottom area is soft to touch and will easily retain all types of dust, while the hard plastic on top side aims at increasing the style factor of the device (it’s also a smudge magnet). This means that either device will easily slip in your pocket and will take very little space out of your backpack. The SanDisk Extreme and the WD My Passport share very similar dimensions, the former measuring 3.78 x 1.95 x 0.34 inches (and weighs 1.37 ounces), while the latter is measuring 3.5 x 1.8 x 0.39 inches (and weighs 1.23 ounces), so, besides a slight width difference, both drives have almost the same size.
So, the shape and the dimensions of the drive are very important considering that it has to be small enough to be carried around, rugged enough to survive multiple trips and elegant enough to not look like a toy next to your professional laptop.

There are multiple reasons to use an external SSD, such as to easily transfer data between computers or, in the case of some laptops that don’t allow you to upgrade the internal SSD (the MacBook Pro), to add more available storage or to store the OS (but in this case I would recommend a Thunderbolt 3 SSD). We’d probably still choose it ahead of the two aforementioned rivals as the overall balance makes it a compelling choice. Other minor niggles include the cable length and the fact that it dissipates a lot of heat which may affect the longevity of the device. The only real thing that lets it down is the price which is far too high compared to the competition out there (or even competition within WDC). So here we have it, a fast, compact portable SSD with a large capacity and a very long warranty. A $130 price tag will leave you with more than just pocket change but you lose out on the warranty.

It is a full waterproof SSD with a striking metallic blue/black colour scheme and a price tag, at least for the 1TB version that significantly undercuts the My Passport SSD. The only other serious candidate is the Adata SE800 which we reviewed almost a year ago.

The SanDisk Extreme Pro is more expensive - at $190, $40 more - than its brethren but is far more rugged with an IP55 rating to back it, making it an interesting alternative (assuming the price difference remains constant). WD’s sister brand, Sandisk, has what looks like repackaged versions of the My Passport portable SSD complete with encryption software and five-year warranty but for a more active audience. Note that prices can and will vary wildly depending on a number of factors suggested retail prices are just that, suggested. Rivals to the My Passport external SSD will be fast (1GBps speeds or more), relatively affordable and quite compact. Also as expected, the drive can be secured using password protection and 256-bit AES hardware encryption using WD Security. The latter is probably the most interesting of the three as in theory, it allows you to save your data to the drive and a copy to an independent cloud storage service for disaster recovery.
